Music Ministry - Choirs

Thomas Carlyle writes of Music in liturgy, “Music is well said to be the speech of angels; in fact, nothing among the utterances allowed to humanity is felt to be so divine.  It brings us near to the infinite.” Because liturgy is the ritual enactment of our participation in the Paschal Mystery of Christ, the music that supports this enactment is itself a ritual embodiment of this mystery.  The role of music in liturgy is not to entertain, or to keep the assembly “interested” when the liturgy seems lifeless. Rather, its role is to help the assembly surrender to the Paschal Mystery as it unfolds within the liturgy.
Our Music Director Francisco Ortiz earned a B.A. in Music from Dominican University in 2006, where he studied percussion with Ken Crawford and choral/orchestral conducting & voice with Dr. Craig Singleton. In 2008, he received his Master of Music in Music Education degree from Holy Names University where he studied conducting with Judit Hartyányi, Professor at the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest. Francisco has served as Assistant Director with the Contra Costa Chorale and is currently the Director of the Dominican Chorale.
There are many opportunities to participate in music ministry at St. Dominic’s. Everyone is invited to participate. Contact our Music Director [fortiz@stdombenicia.org : 707-335-4682] for more information about any of our music ministries.
